Sleep is one of the big subjects and I am providing a variety of resources that will help you decide which approach will work best for your family. I raised my own 4 babies with a modified family bed style, I transitioned them to their own beds at different ages, but some of my best parenting memories are our sleepy snuggling and nursing.
Some have pointed out that babies that cry themselves to sleep surrender to despair.
“If your only goal were to get your baby to sleep through the night, then leaving him to cry would accomplish that goal. The problem is that the reason the baby stops crying and sleeps is that he becomes so discouraged he gives up trying to signal that he needs help. In effect, he has learned to sleep through the night…… out of despair rather than contentment.” ~ Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper, Author of Smartlove
Others acknowledge that chronically exhausted bleary eyed parents are a hazard to a baby’s health also… So, how to navigate ? Here are links to some of the books I trust on the subject. You will find a solution here that will work for your family…Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby by Dr. Weisebluth, and Dr. William Sears The Sleep Book and Dr. Sears page on sleep issues. I do not really recommend the book Baby Wise as I don’t feel it is developmentally appropriate for very young babies. Many parents have also had success with the program developed by the authors of “ Sleepy Planet“
