Western culture seems to have a strange notion about babies and sleep…. Only recently have babies been put into rooms down the hall without an adult around. Perhaps there was a nursemaid, perhaps the parents shipped the newborn off to a village wet nurse for 2 years but babies have slept with or near adults throughout history and in most of the rest of the world today. Somehow Western babies are supposed to sleep alone through from 7 pm to 6 am. nightly. This is unrealistic, although some, few but some, will do that.
Much of the struggle I see with new moms these days are centered around their babies actual sleep patterns and their own lack of it. Those who write the books about surviving the early months frequently chant the mantra ” Sleep When The Baby Sleeps” and it is good , if rarely taken advice. More than one mom has confided in me though that although they had promised themselves they would never ever sleep with their babies in their own beds, fatigue and ease had won the day and cuddling with their nursing baby in bed became irresistibly logical.
